General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
I have a B. Eng. in Engineering Physics, an M. Sc. in Physics, and have taken numerous courses in Physics, Mathematics, Climatology, and Geography at the graduate level. My marks are almost always the highest of any class that I take.
I have studied climate change for years and I categorically say that Vlad knows next to nothing about the science when he discusses climate change; his views are all ideologically driven and denialist.
P.S. I just got 100% on my climate change midterm...

Ask for a refund. Couldn't resist. :)
Regarding the 100%, the only ones who got that from my profs were those who blew sunshine up their butts.

Enough said...
Your problem, Paul, is that you are totally unbalanced. The above post is evidence enough; you are so sure of yourself and your credentials, there is no way you could possibly be wrong.
You have no concept of the notion that getting 100% on a midterm only means that you didn't make any waves; you didn't challenge any long-held beliefs; you didn't think out of the box; you just memorized and quoted back without thinking about what you were quoting; you made calculations on data without questioning the data itself. That's how you get 100%. I know, I got a lot of 100%'s in my college days too.
I scoff at your 100% as much as I scoff at my own 100%'s from the past. And the fact that you have to advertise it here, you were probably chomping at the bit to get this post out. This whole thread is your invention and your soapbox.
The only way you could possibly become balanced and truly grow is to realize how futile your obsession with science is. I can tell you the one clear truth that a lifetime of study of any branch of science will teach you:
"There's no free lunch."
That's it in a nutshell. It applies to every aspect of existence on this physical plane. Anything you do on this physical plane that appears to give you something free, you later discover there is a price. Maybe the price won't affect you personally, but it will affect others, perhaps even your descendants. Since you do have descendants, I would think you might care about that, but I believe you are too immersed in yourself and your credentials right now for that to take hold.
If there were a free lunch, we'd have controlled cold fusion by now. We'd have anti-gravity and we'd have nanorobots circulating in our bloodstream, repairing all damage to our cells and our DNA, keeping us youthful for eternity.
The scientific search for a free lunch will go on, and it will never bear fruit. To understand this, you need to go beyond science, into theology and the study of the supernatural. Sorry, there are no 100% midterms offered. Everyone follows their own, unique path to understanding. And if you choose to live your current life without going down that path.... you will return to have the opportunity again.
Only the rushing is heard...
Onward flies the bird.
Massive earthquake off coast of Japan (8.4 on some reports, 8.9 on others) followed by large tsunami that has inundated coast. Occurred roughly 2:20am or so EST, watch live footage of fires/flooding at:
Confirmed at 8.9 with 10 m tsunami. An enormous quake, lots of aftershocks felt even in Tokyo.
It seems the cooling system in one of the reactors isn't working from what I heard on TV. The Americans are sending emergency coolant from what I'm hearing on TV. I guess you know how serious that could be. The aftershocks are also very strong.
I watched the quake news on CNN as Breaking News before I went to bed this morning.
One hour has passed with no response from Gary, Vlad, Bonham (GVB); must be a record. It is impossible to have the last word with a retired guy like Gary, notice when there is a lull in posting his post was always the last.
This site ranks the merit of blog sites; it is an excellent resource to assess the quality of the information you are getting. I could not find any of the GVD sources in the rankings, they are too far down... http://technorati.com/blogs/directory/green/

I've got a life, Paul. I don't sit around waiting for you to post so I can reply.
Interesting article. How's about you get paid a donut a month for the power your solar panels supply? Sound fair to you?
In any case, we'll see how the voting goes in the upcoming provincial election. After the leak at Pickering which is just coming out now, I have to wonder if the money is going for alternate sources of energy instead of maintainance on the aging nuclear reactors. I'm wondering if we'll get to hear the maintainance schedule on that equipment and the last time the seal was replaced how often it's checked. I figure they won't mention that part.
I suspect you'll see a right wing conservative government which will make the Harris and Eves governments seem enlightened. Tax and spend is on the way out.

I guess that's why you have to resort to broadcasting your academic credentials and calling your critics "a joke", to make up for not getting in the last word. Small man syndrome.
Isn't it amazing that I posted here just a week ago that even with the most modern of science, all we can prove is that there is no free lunch, and what happens but a modern nuclear power plant proves me right again. The price for Tokyo's bright neon nights is now beyond comprehension, to the entire country of Japan at least.
It's gonna take a lot of solar panels to make up for lost nuclear power generation. And eventually there will be a price to pay for solar... toxic pollution at landfills and manufacturing sites, probably heavy metals getting into groundwater. It's never free. That's the way this physical plane was designed, and I don't care if you got 100% on 100% of your midterms, you can't change the design. All you can do is rearrange it.

I was playing chess last night.
Like you, I suspect that the Ontario Liberals are going to get destroyed in the next election. We can't afford four more years of this.
The next few federal elections are shaping up as interesting. I'm surprised that Harper actually said no and nixed any federal involvement in a new arena for Quebec City. Iggy came out and said that if he won the election his government would help fund the arena. Iggy didn't say anything about Calgary and Edmonton's similar ambitions.
The heir apparent once or twice removed from Iggy managed to take one foot out of his mouth and insert another one in. Justin Trudeau fresh off his Christmas fur kerfluffle managed to say he was offended by the government when they said honour killings, female circumcision, family violence and a few other such practices were barbaric. I suppose that is one way to get noticed when everyone is focused on the situation in Japan and the Middle East. Bob Rae futures just went up quite a bit. There may be more Margaret than Pierre Elliot in the intellect department there. Even the NDP issued a condescending statement on that one.
