General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
You got the picture right Mr Baljeu. But Bob and company want Top players to beg on an individual basis for a crumb of bread, thus reinforcing their sense of worth.
Oh man have you ever gotten hold of the wrong end of the stick. You are probably the one person on earth that would try to make Ghandi look bad. Especially if he didn't pay appearance fees.

I'm glad you like my picture, but read my bottom line. It's not about begging for a crumb. Bob makes an offer, you say it's not worth it, and end it there. You don't have to beg, and Bob doesn't have to offer.

I read all the lines don't worry. However your bottom line may not be my bottom line. Whether it is about a crumb or not is not the main point. The point is that offering merely free entry to a weekender (that does not even have guaranteed prizes), in exchange for advanced commitment to play is simply insulting and shows a deep lack of respect for top players.
By the way it's about principles not about me. I am not at all expecting or hoping for decent offers to play in weekenders in Southern Ontario.

However, I am certainly not the one idiot on earth to confuse Ghandi with Gillanders.

Idiot is your word. I simply pointed out that you have a way of finding the worst in anyone. Bob's not the kind of guy to be behaving the way you spray your accusations around as. You are quickly becoming your own self-parody; with your constant complaints of being insulted on behalf of all 'top players'. Yes Bob helps organize chess and has done so all of these years because he enjoys insulting you. I guess he joins the long list of organizers that are all motivated by the same reason. It's an evil empire of chess organizers; thanks for warning us all about them. It couldn't be that they are just trying to organize tournaments so that us little players can play chess and keep chess tournaments running in Canada?

Being called "self-parody" and other flatteries by "perfect" people is quite amusing. I will simply point out that there is a big gap between "finding the worst in anyone" and confusing people with Gandhi. I try to find a balance somewhere in between.
Although this kind of exchange may be funny at times I would rather stick to real issues but you and others stubbornly refuse this. For example you like to stuck the expression "appearance fees" everywhere to make my points look extreme, when I have never mentionned that at all. We are light years away from that when our GMs still don't even get free entries to Ontario weekenders.

So you have no interest in appearance fees? That's interesting; you heard it here first Jean Hebert does not support appearance fees.

Again you do your best to twist things around unless it simply reflects your level of non-comprehension. That would not be surprising from someone who confuses Gandhi and Gillanders.

Okay so Jean Hebert may or may not support appearance fees; he may or may not mean what he says. Slip him a few dollars and find out; he says appearance fees are an extremist view but he may just take your money? Be careful about mentioning historical figures around him. Anything else Jean?
Zeljko, are you daft, or are you picking a fight? Jean quite clearly expressed that organizers can do a lot to support master participation, without putting out free cash. Jean has not sought money, so why suggest he did? Or why suggest he doesn't like money? You're off topic.

Alan are you daft or are you picking a fight? If you can't read between the lines I can.
