General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
The ratings portion of the website does not seem to be updating properly. The new rating appears in the post rating of the last tournament played but doesn't show up in the rating field.
Have we decided to freeze all ratings as of the creation date of the website?
you need to distinguish between the content (responsibility of the CFC) and the website per se - that is stylistically elements but also primarily the elements you can't see. The statement that was made about this was that the old site had become unmanageable and impossible to cleanly edit. Presumably this site is easier to manage but you won't be able to tell that by just looking.
Much of what you say is content and not part of the $18,000. Hopefully there is a plan for editing work because yes, the material is largely out of date. But that's another topic.
Can someone explain to me what is it about the new site that is worth $18,000?
I take your word there are things I can't see. Perhaps someone can explain it to me(and possibly others)
Mike
Well, the new site uses CSS (style sheets) to make presentation consistent across all pages; it uses a content-management system to permit people to avoid hacking hand-crafted HTML code to change a sentence or paragraph here or there... The old CFC website was basically hand-coded html with lots of cut and paste or cut and drop... and the editor was notepad.
Basically, the fee was for transforming all the previous content (well, maybe not all...) into the new methodology and gaining the capability to move forward with new content in a consistent and straightforward way. I believe (by I am not certain) that the interface with the ratings database and member database was modernized too...
Perhaps Fred has more details...

Mike: The CFC put the new website through a complete business process. An RFP was prepared, submissions were made from I think 7 different companies and the Executive with the help of an advisory committee made a choice as to which company they would go with.
I'm not going to get into specifics as to what possible $ value the site has to the CFC. I'm willing to accept the fact that some people don't think we got our money's worth and move on with more positive endeavours.

Hi Vlad: In future a quicker response may be possible if you send me an e-mail.
Anyway, I checked on this and it's because right now Resolution is in the process of switching us to a faster server. I would think that sometime this afternoon the ratings will all be in sync.
I think it looks great. All that's needed is a program/plan of regular small improvements to content.
As for increasing revenues, it goes like this: Someone searches for chess in Canada, finds chess.ca. They think, "where can I play?". They find about all the local tournaments, and the big events for travel. They pick one, go, and join the CFC.
So the biggest revenue bang will be to create a system for TDs to post tournaments, and a way for players to browse tournaments by location. En Passant had that section, and chess.ca should have it.

alan: Once we stabalize the web site, we can certainly look at updating the information and seeing what future features we can add.
I'm not a web site maven so I have to ask this question. Do you think the CFC got its moneys worth?
Hi Gary - I think it is far too early to ask this question. We are still working out the bugs and I can appreciate that some people are frustrated.
I do believe this has been a wise investment for the CFC. I really think it will take 6 months before the full value of the new website is appreciated by the membership. We should take a poll at Christmas time. :)

I don't know what a poll would give other than personal preference.
I noticed the criticism of the French translation on the site. Not a language with which I know enough to comment on the translation.
It reminds me of a time when I had a number of CC documents which had been changed translated to French. I received criticism over the translation. That stopped when I told the main critics who had done the translation. Possibly it depends on how well the translator understand the English which is being translated.

I have never forgotten a line from a French Canadian in the Investment Business. I had traveled to Montreal to review some complaints regarding the translations we used in certain business documents.
After an hour of disagreements among the 5 member panel of French Canadians regarding translations from English to French, one older member said, "You could ask 5 of us to translate something and most likely get 5 different answers!" The levity cooled things off and we got to work!
