I guess this will heat up the discussion of cold or warm blooded dinosaurs. However, it does point to warmer weather in the north. Before the climate changed.

The north was warmer in the past. That's why the Vikings were able to have settled colonies on Greenland. Those colonies died out when the temperatures cooled and argiculture and animal husbandry were no longer possible. As well the Vikings refused to adopt Inuit ways that would have allowed them to cope with the changes.

Of course Bob Gillanders will say they had bigger snow storms when he was a kid but here goes Canada http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/story/...ebec-snow.html

In the Toronto area the worst I've heard them predict is the possibility of some freezing rain tomorrow. Heavier rain Tuesday.

Before Bob was a kid, Glaciers formed the area which is now called the Great Lakes. I wonder what caused global warming then, some 13,000 years ago?

I guess with the Dinosaurs, those which turned into birds were warm blooded.

Climatologists have been reluctant to use terms like "catastrophe", "threat to civilization", "mass extinctions", etc. to describe the dangers of climate change, but the threat is now so large that these terms are being used more and more often...

            No more downplaying...

The problem is people are becoming immune to the doomsters. The got through global warming in good shape and are now tackling climate change.

Maybe we'll get a longer growing season to replenish the food that's being burned in our cars.

I guess that's why they are pulling stunts like this now. http://www.vancouverobserver.com/blo...ain-white-rock

Of course when they get home they still expect their electricity to be on to power their homes, their laptops and their funky coffee makers at their local funky coffee shop.

The most shocking aspect of that article is that the fine is only $115.

I notice they don't to Appalachia or other U.S. sites to protest.

Mostly the mining companies are Metalurgical coal and Thermal Coal. The first used for things like steel making and the Thermal coal for electricity. There largest producer of Thermal coal in Canada is Sherritt Int. as far as I know. Somewhere around 45% of Alberta's electricity comes from coal.

The first "natural" gas used in Toronto was manufactured gas. It was made from coal.

The most shocking aspect is that these people don't appear to have heard about abiotic oil. Coal production will be oh-so-yesteryear once we're all swimming in a sea of abiotic oil. Right, Vlad? Um, when did you say that was going to happen? ;)

They are finding oil at deeper levels than was thought to be reasonable for fossil fuels. I think the oil comes from the mantle of the earth. We are limited by the cost of drilling to the depths and the technology to extract the oil. Now with the fracking techniques we can crack the rock and extract oil and gas. The can drill down a couple of miles vertically and then drill horizontally. They can also drill horizontally from different points of the vertical part of the well. They are now extracting oil and gas from known formation which were previously uneconomical.

Drilling a well can cost millions and come up dry or uneconomical.

Gary, I have been hearing about this new technique of fracking. Is it safe?
I see the Council of Canadians doesn't think so, and would like to impose a moratorium. Hmm...are their concerns legitimate, or is this just another evil tactic of the environmental movement picking on the poor oil and gas industry?

Well Bob, I am not sure how safe it is but since the environmental movement doesn't like nuclear plants, coal plants, natural gas plants, oil burning plants and in fact the only thing that they seem to like is extremely uneconomical wind and solar power and sending money to Russia to buy carbon credits so that they can build nukes to threaten us with the result is that we are running out of options. I don't really care what the Council of Canadians thinks. They and their allies lost the last election so it will be at least three years before anything they say will be relevant again.

There is a method that exists to turn coal into oil. The only problem is that it is expensive. The fear is all OPEC would have to do is flood the market with their oil and drop the price enough to make such plants uneconomical and bankrupt anyone who builds them. Other than that the US has a huge amount of coal.
