Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. 2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:

Vlad is either having a time-out from reality or just having a Forest Gump moment.
The people that have made big bucks are the climate deniers since they are working at the beck and call of the fossil fuel industry. Meanwhile, the little guys who mostly work for free in their momentous task to inform the public about the grave dangers of climate change are doing it in the sincere belief that climate change and associated severe weather like floods and droughts is quickly threatening our food supply and way of life.
Vlad is very ingenious in always accusing the good guys of what his fossil fuel brainwashers are doing themselves.
He also lies about what other people do, for example calling me a ceramic engineer. WTF, where did that come from. Never had I worked with sinks and toilet bowls. Clearly he is delusional.

Group think. Zeljko has learned well from his mentor Vlad, hopefully he is still salvageable and has not dropped too far down into the make-believe land of fantasy that his mentor inhabits. My views on climate change come from reading thousands of peer reviewed papers and switching my career to study and address the problem.
Does gravity exist Mr Kitich? Do you subscribe to the group-think regarding gravity. Perhaps you do but you certainly do not call it group-think. Climate change is exactly the same.
Ceramic engineering? Once again you say whatever pops into your facsimile of a brain. Where is that from? Another lie is 1987, I got degrees on other years but nothing in 1987. Thanks for the embellishment, and there is no such thing as cool aid. Literacy is not one of your stronger points.

Some help with definitions Mr Kitich. A "heat wave" is a period of time that is hotter than NORMAL. Of course Greece has a climate warmer than ours, it is a Mediterranean climate. It has been much hotter than "normal" recently, thus the expression.

Bob, the more accurate term for Vlad and others is climate change denier. Overwhelming evidence exists regarding climate change, so denial is the proper term. Skeptic is too generous a term. It is good to be skeptical of things since that means you are thinking for yourself and basing views by weighing the evidence. When the evidence is overwhelming most reasonable people accept the evidence, those that do not are no longer skeptics but deniers.

I agree that you know nothing about climate change Zeljko, and that is very obvious to all of the readers on this board (excepting Vlad and Gary, perhaps). Hopefully you know something about the subjects that you spend your time studying.
I spend my time on climate change, thus I know a great deal about it. I concede that you know more about your specialty than mine. I would not expect you to have the balls to reciprocate this comment about me and my specialty.
Socrates would roll over in his grave or spit at your feet if he was to see how you pull his quotes out of the air and try to use them completely out of context. You think it makes you look scholarly however Chesstalk readers can see right through your charade.
I am well past the point of wasting time by attempting to enlighten yourself and other laymen like Vlad in the science of climate change. No point. Lost cause.

Your fantasies of being a renaissance man who is expert in every subject are just fantasies. Here is how the world works, kid. Different people specialize in different areas and others "are willing to believe what they are told" when these specialists comment on their field of specialty. For example my specialty is physics, engineering, and climatology and I am working hard to know more in these technical areas than anyone else. You know f### all about these areas. However you do have your own specialty in which I would approach you for information that I required relating to it.
OK, your specialty is finance and Gary claims to be a guru on stocks. So tell me what personal investments/stocks/financial plans would allow me to make bags of money in the event that I am absolutely correct with my projections of climate change. I know what not to invest in, but what would be good to invest in.

Climate change is proceeding at rates much faster than anyone would have imagined. It is a given that humanity severely reduce our emissions. However the rapidity of the change now requires regional geoengineering in the Arctic to keep the sea ice intact throughout the melt season. Failing to do this commits our planet to an unrecognizably warmer climate and global chaos. The geoengineering would only buy us more time, unfortunately the planet is committed to massive warming, nothing we can do will stop this. After all, we are just a planet filled with dumb-ass humans.

The astronauts about who you speak are a bunch of old timers, sitting in their meetings being brainwashed by one astronaut who is being paid huge sums of money from Exxon and other oil guys to speak to the public. None of these guys are climatologists. This is a pure BS PR snow job.

Gary, the earthquake effect on the planet was negligible. What is your point? Nothing alleged about climate change, to bad you were not in Ottawa where I would give you a comp. to attend my climatology course.
What you are calling climate change is also based on measurement increases which are negligible. Assuming they are correct.
It was a hot day here yesterday. In today's newspaper they reminded us the record high temperature in this area was not broken and was set Aug. 25, 1948. I remember hot summers back then. Week after week but it wasn't in this area. It was on the prairies.
I think I'll pass on the climatology course. I'd sooner work in a cow pasture but that's a personal preference.
I'm going to ramble a bit and take in a few of the post from today rather than individual replies.
If you don't mind, what degrees do you hold and in what disciplines. There are some weird credit courses around, like underwater basket weaving.
The U.S. is very big in burning oil and coal. Much bigger than Canada. Why not lobby them and picket the coal mines in the Appalachians? They are ripping the tops off mountains to get at the coal. A lot of the pollution we get here comes from the U.S. Not that I think the miners will be sympathetic to environmentalists.
Regarding the redo on your picket sign, it's not far from what is happening. Many waste treatment plants use the "merde" to make gas which they use along with natural gas from the utility. The BTU count is not as high as they get from the utility but high enough to use it. I guess it's also cheaper per million BTU's than what they buy. So when you talk about the fossil fuel industry it should be noted every time you take a dump you may very will be contributing to the burning of fossil fuels if you're using the public sewage system.
As far as I know a heat wave in these parts is 3 days in a row of heat above 32C degrees. The average daily high at this time of the year in this area is around 27C degrees.
you have to realize hot weather and cold weather is not considered to be inclimate weather. However, if there's lightning around I wouldn't want to be working on a pipeline.
Paul, just letting things run their course is not an option. Eventually, enough humans will realize climate change is real and action will be taken. It is only a matter of time. But the longer we wait, the tougher it will be.
But I do like your alien Greenland scenario. That is really thinking outside the box.
Glad you like the Greenland mothership concept. I've been liking your recent posts on this thread, your writing has improved quite a bit. Also, even though you believe in AGW, you are willing to accept that others are skeptics, whereas most others posting here are being quite extreme and simply not tolerating anyone who has another viewpoint.
For me, the skeptical part has more to do with whether we can do anything to "save humanity" from itself at all. You aren't going to be able to tell China, let alone the U.S., to stop burning coal and oil. As the famous saying goes, "You guys are going to keep doing that until someone loses an eye". The world will keep doing what it's doing right up until its last dying breath.
I am also somewhat skeptical of the science and the data behind the AGW claims. It's like having a drug company proclaim that they have a cure for cancer, and you find out that they haven't actually tested it on people, they are just basing their claim on a computer simulation of how they expect the drug to act inside the human body, and the simulation is based on their current set of knowledge about the human body. Well, the human body is IMMENSELY complicated, and no such simulation could ever possibly be accurate because there's TOO MUCH WE DON'T YET KNOW. The unintended side effects, sometimes fatal, of even today's modern drugs is a perfect example of how little we understand.
So it is, I believe, with global climate. Simply too complicated to ever really KNOW FOR SURE. For Beckwith to claim that all the evidence is in, and anyone doubting is an idiot, is only evidence that he has abandoned our reality and entered a world of his own making.
But even though we can't ever know for sure, we can observe and measure trends. And there is a definite trend to global warming, that I am not skeptical of. Man probably does have something to do with it. But as to how long it will last and how severe it will get... well, yes, it might melt the ice caps and all that other stuff, but we DON'T REALLY KNOW. There is a non-zero chance that it could all shift to global cooling starting next year.
The complications of everything around us, including even the quantum world of the stuff everything is made of, are such that we aren't even close to being Gods. We have to continue to admit that we MIGHT BE WRONG about such complicated matters as the human body and the planet and the universe.

I wouldn't trust you in anything related to those fields. Your fantasy is that a 25 year old degree in ceramic engineering which you have hardly ever applied to a job somehow makes you an expert on physics ad climatology. The last time I knew you you could barely find employment. As for the stock information considering that your degree is a 5 year degree in ceramics and management you should at least know the basics of financial management. Or have you also forgotten that part of your degree from lack of use? Otherwise you should be able to at least answer your own question. I also don't give personal financial advise to someone I definitely don't have an established relationship with. I have my ethics to consider. I also have to consider the likelihood that you are trying to solicit some kind of advise from me to set me up for a future lawsuit when you misconstrue what I say. I also don't find your bit of money that you may have to actually invest all that interesting. I don't deal in nickles and dimes. That would be like asking you as a ceramic engineer to make me some plates.
Your megalomania is that the rest of us will accept whatever you say because we don't have a ceramic engineering degree. No thanks, I'll take the word of well qualified NASA scientists and astronauts over your claims any day. You seem to forget that those who do specialize differ in thier conclusions. Ever heard of getting a second opinion? The great thing about a democracy is that the rest of us don't have to swallow whatever the 'experts' tell us. That kind of thinking went out with the 1950's. Especially when doctors used to actually tell us that smoking was healthy for you.
Do I seem to be able to form my own independent opinion? Does that bother you? Apparently it outrages you. When an accountant proclaims that the science is settled without question I have to scratch my head.
