General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Serge was a CFC employee (when we share a beer...that is a good story)...he also worked for the CMA and the FQE...he was Gerry Lichfield's boss...ask him for details :)
Larry
Serge has just announced his candidacy on the CFC board. It might be time for a separate thread for him, here.
Kevin has supported most of those who became CFC Presidents over the last couple of decades...only to change his mind after the fact.
Serge was asked to leave as the CFC Executive Director about a decade ago...the problem in Canada is that we have short memories...as I have always said...the CFC is its own worse enemy...HELLO!
There are good people at the CFC (regardless of what you may read elsewhere).
Bob Gillanders has been great...David Lavin did what had to be done to save the ship from sinking...
This is not easy...especially for volunteers...chess in this country has had many awesome folks step forward...it is easy to criticize...but at the end of the day...I think we are back on the right track...let's not screw things up!

Archambault would be a shocker; not only was he at times incompetant in that Executive Director role ( he'd let his personal politics interfere with getting things done ), I've experienced enough from him to understand there is something extremely troubling about his moral compass. Seemingly no empathy for others, and capable of destructive rages where dishonesty is not a problem. One of my biggest life lessons was realizing that nothing good can come from dealing with these characters.
Ignoring the past personal conflicts, CFC governors should ask one important question. Is Serge Archambault running for President to help out Canadian chess, or is he running to help out Serge Archambault ? I think the answer is obvious.

Better an actual race than either an acclamation or a rubberstamping. When was the last time we had an actual race for the President's chair?

A somewhat surprising choice by the Governors (in my mind anyway - I see I sent no proxy that year). It would appear that Lavin did not attend the AGM in Edmonton or send a proxy !!

As I think he did a phone call before the elections.

I must admit, I fail to see any plus side to being the president of the CFC.
Only Obama has a more thankless job.
David was expecting to be on the phone with the meeting, which happened the first day and when he went to call in for the second day there was some kind of hiccup, supposedly on the meeting end. He was expecting to be able to make his pitch for re-election himself and thus had nobody lined up to do it for him.
I heard from at least one person who "punished" David for "not bothering to show up at the meeting"... which I found rather disturbing, given the distances and time constraints involved.

You've still got to distinguish your good candidates ( like Obama ) from your really bad candidates ( like George W. Bush ). Everyone has their own reasons for wanting to do stuff, I can see one motive might be to prevent Archambault from winning. Another might be, it might look good on your resume.
The CFC has all sorts of similar dilemma's right now. Is running the Canadian Closed not a "thankless" task at times ? The CFC has always been a highly charged political envoronment with a lot of secrecy, and these aspects are by choice. Not everyone supports these choices. One of the costs of such an approach is you lose most of the young people, this is not the world they live in ( a much more dynamic social media approach ).
And how is that Good Candidate working out for the American economy?
Oops! I forgot, It's still Bush's fault!!
As Tricky Dick pointed out "the man at the top must take the blame!"
That seems only fair since the man at the top usually grabs all the glory that is going around when something is perceived as a success.
I think the "job" of the U.S. presidency is not doable. The public associates *everything* (good and bad) with the president, but the day to day reality is quite different: the president certainly has a lot of influence over policy but the rest of the government "machine" actually controls what happens.
The (U.S.) President is simply a figure head - a lightning rod for the attention of the media.
Those who are not satisfied with Obama should also ask "how about Palin or Limbaugh or Romney - how would that work out?"

Obama has an unemployment rate over 9%. He's using the old economic model of Boom, Bust, War. He'll probably be a one term president.
I don't know what that has to do with the CFC election.
It might not matter who wins as president. Chess is like music lessons. When kids get a bit older most quit. Kids chess looks to be what is being promoted these days.
I can't understand why anyone would want to be president of the organization. There is so much to do and so little money to do it with. The president has the responsibility and takes the heat while the money sits in the foundation. It appears not to matter who is president. Unless Bob wants to correct something I've written.
