Now I know many of our climate change skeptics are counting on new technologies to replace fossil fuels when we run out, so what about fusion. Is it still mostly science fiction, or will it someday become reality?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7RqT9i5f4c

    Just asking. :)
It will eventually become a reality but not this week. When fusion becomes a reality wind turbines and solar will be discarded like used tissues. Oh wait. That is already happening.

Eventually, are you sure? Are you willing to bet the planet on it?

        It is not my bet.

Solar panels and turbines are not viable using the Ontario model. They could be viable if you switched to emphasis on increasing self sufficiency locally. Eventually I think we will get some more sane political representatives and they will look at those options. Around October by my calculations...

They are, in part, my turbines. I have shares in the company which owns the turbines at Shelburne and Wolfe Island. A total of about 219 wind turbines. That's Transalta.

Actually, I get investment ideas from this message board. As an example, Chris and I were talking about chess on a cell phone. He told me which phone and I looked into the phone which looked really good. So I bought shares in the company. I could probably sell those Research in Motion shares tomorrow morning and buy myself a nice cell phone with my gains. I don't have a cell phone.

Dark Drkulec has no imagination and cannot think beyond a week or so. He also has no knowledge of history and is completely anti-science and anti-innovation. Government funding has been necessary in the past to initiate almost all new products such as aircraft, trains, rockets, television, radio, computers; i.e. just about any new invention.

Corporations do not do this on their own. Once the idea or proof of principal or prototype has been built the corporations carry the ball forward and innovate and mass produce and make the product accessible to society. Without the government support and research and development, direct or indirect, none of these products are developed in the first place.

Solar and wind and other renewable technologies are just amazing and it is wonderful that they are being developed. I did not think that anyone could object to them, but obviously Drkulec and people like Hudak with totally irrational emotional rants object to them. Shame...prices of these renewables are dropping so quickly they will overtake fossil fuel energy sources and make energy cheaper for everyone, so ignore the invective and hatred and foaming at the mouth views of puppets of oil like anti-innovative, anti-science Drkulec...if he got his way society would return back to the dark ages and like Dobrich says will return to living in caves...

Paul, you are not very bright. I am well aware of the product innovation cycle. It does not apply to products that governments are trying to shove down our throats. Solar and wind turbine technologies are mature and not new. They were mature twenty years ago. You can't pay 30 times what something is worth and do anything but reward your cronies, which I suspect is the real point of the Ontario's green energy policies.

Solar and wind turbine technologies are not mature, who are you kidding. They are still expensive until economies of scale kick in and efficiencies rise. Huge improvements are being made on reduction of price per Watt of output and they will soon leave your fossil fuel friends scrambling.

Why is oil still being heavily subsidized by governments. Hasn't it been mature for 100 years? Count the cost to our lungs, loss of biodiversity, explosion of extreme weather events, complete destruction of the Gulf of Mexico ecosystem (one huge dead zone) and it is oil that we cannot afford any longer. Oil's cost to us is far greater than 30x when you account for these factors, it is 1000000x when it wipes out the planet.

With radio, I can recall when I was young you needed a license for an AM radio. A license salesman (or whatever he was called), used to go door to door selling licenses. Mostly, if he heard a radio the occupant had to buy a license. I can still recall the kids running door to door telling people the license salesman was coming. :) That was in the late 1940's.

Interesting and sad. The US is back peddling on environmental regulations that will hurt the future health of its citizens. The US is joining the third world. :(

This surprises you? They have an economy to worry about.

By the way, in this area the prevailing wind is from the Northwest.

Here's an article which deals with solar and loan guarantees.

Did I say it surprised me? No, but it is very discouraging. But more examples of short term thinking. Eventually, they (or grandchildren) will have to pay the price of environmental and health costs.

It is also discouraging to see solar companies filing for bankruptcy, as is Solyndra and others, who are struggling against competition from Chinese companies. Again, decisions made with short term thinking. :(

How's filing for bankruptcy "short term thinking"? I thought it had to do with financial considerations.

The American voters will have to decide if they approve.

We get to pass our judgment here in Ontario in another month. Seems like a pretty easy decision to me. One guy wants me to pay HST on my hydro and heating bills and the other guy doesn't. It's what I call a no brainer.

Pretty close to $500k per job. I wonder how many of those jobs were of the $15 an hour and less variety.
