With all those pollutants being put in the air, how much has atmopsheric pressure increased in the last century? Atmospheric pressure at sea level is around 14.7 PSI and I'm not aware that has changed. How is this possible?

For those who don't know, atmospheric pressure is the weight of a column of air above a vacuum.

Gary, these questions are not answered in the fashion of debate. Numbers are necessary.

Quantify the amount of polutants, quantify the amount of air, and see whether the amount is even significant. I would guess not. But if it is, next see how much precipitates into liquid or solid form by what ever means, and how much escapes earth by natural means (and balance that by how much is added e.g. by the solar wind and meteors).

Gary, CO2 is a trace gas with a concentration over millions of years in the range from 200 to 300 parts per million. Fossil fuel burning has raised this level to the current 390 ppm, well outside the "natural" range. Even so, this rise is not enough to significantly affect the overall atmospheric pressure of 14.7 psi (101.3 kpa or 1013 hpa).

Walking really cuts down on the CO2 emissions. I walked from my place to the RA twice (once Thursday evening, once Saturday morning) for the weekender. It's almost exactly 10km per trip. I felt pretty good when I arrived. It cut down on my wandering around the tournament hall during the rounds I played those days. Also had some onions that my wife and I grew at the F-I-Ls. Growing your own vegetables is pretty easy.

If more people grew their own vegetables and walked or biked more we would probably have healthier people and the environmental savings would be significant, I would think. No need for nanny states, government involvement or tax hikes to make those things happen. Oh ya and these two things save money.

Tom: "Hey everybody, walking reduces CO2" won't affect the majority's habits, and "hey everybody, buy electric at double the price" isn't all that effective either.

            So three choices remain:
The nanny state coerces everybody into a walking habit.
The nanny state funds alternative energy sources.
            We live with high carbon.

It would appear that the nanny state is about to be retired with extreme prejudice. There was an article in the paper that indicated that the stated returns on solar projects was far below the government quoted figure of about 11 percent and was actually below 5 percent even ignoring some likely maintenance issues. The thing that I find hard to comprehend is that the producers are still barely breaking even despite the massive subsidies. Perhaps the people making the solar panels are milking the system but this seems very odd if it is proven to be true.

I vote for option C though I do try to get some walking in whenever I can.

Ok, I just found out how Beckwith is paying for his school.... I didn't realize, though, that he was a client of Hair Club For Men....

Watch for a few minutes, he's the one playing lead / rythym guitar. That is, if you can take your eyes off the dancing blonde girl :)

Note the opening bit, the lines "Welcome to the ocean in a labeled can... Welcome to the dehydrated land". I thought the oceans were supposed to RISE....

And if that's not enough, here's another, and again, concentrate, I know the dancing blonde is hard to ignore.... but Beckwith plays a solo!

I know what CO2 is. Even if the rise is what you are claiming, the amount is what's called not meaningful. Who measured and verifed those figures over millions of year and what instrumentation did they use for measurement?

Beckwith: that Australian article is well written, in contrast to Gore's diatribe you posted previously. The compelling question is, where is there evidence of scientific bias suppressing all reasoned debate? How can you explain global agreement over a supposed lie perpetrated by these communities? To be clear, deniers claim most climate scientists are wrong. How can that many educated people believe this way in an unrestricted global forum?

Gary, there are two main sources for information on the CO2 concentrations and temperatures going back almost 1 million years; Antarctica ice cores and marine sediments. For the ice cores, the CO2 is extracted from bubbles in the ice and the temperature is determined from the ratio of oxygen isotopes in the ice.

Alan, yes, the Australian article is great. Here is another interesting article...

Soon they will drop the idea of banning incadescent light bulbs. The flourescent ones are nasty with the mercury. On the one hand we hear the risk is negligable and on the other hand we hear disposal is a problem.

I used to carry a mercury manometer and a couple of bottles of mercury for top ups in the car but I never brought it in the house. Back then nobody worried about mercury and measuring pressure in PSIA was more common and the manometers were used for checking setups on equipment.

Will you be doing anything eye catching for the planet this summer?
