General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
IMHO, you and other CFC Executives owing apology to juniors for what happened last year. Mr. Kitich needs to apologize to elderly for insulting them and Mr. Zach apologize to unfortunate Ghana kids for putting them down and leveling them to 3rd world county citizens with his posts!
First, I suggest you lead by example, if you want others to follow. Please write official apology. Second, you should encourage Mr. Kitich to apologize over 'happy meal' or something. Mr. Zach should do same thing. Someone should answer for those ridiculous actions, comments and insults publicly!
How is intense membership coming today? Paying attention to your off-topic posts here, we are under impression, that it is not going anywhere. :D
Why don't you just drop it Egorov. The argument was between me and Pushke and happened more than 10 years ago. It's interesting that the only point of manners you seem to have remembered is to be nice to the elderly. Everything else you seem to have forgotten. For the record, Pushke's age does not bother me in the least. If you for example would like to go to the current executive and ask that I be banned from the club, by all means go right ahead. Maybe that will stop your insanity. Obsession is not healthy.
Bob and Zach have even less to do with it than you do. And yes fire away if you are that obsessed because this will be my last post on the subject so as not to annoy other people on the board. However, I would dare to ask if you have checked with Pushke if he wants his name bandied about on Chesstalk? Has he asked you to speak for him? Of do you just include posting for the elderly on chesstalk when they don't do it themselves as part of your be nice to the elderly policy?
And all this because I dared to mention how small the Hamilton chess club is today compared to what it was in the 70's. So here's an idea why don't you go to Pushke the Elder and ask him how the club was back then?

For the curious, here's what I used as a (brief) 'pitch' of my own when contacting ex-CFC members (the other two committee members I allowed to compose their own 'pitch' to deliver to their share of our list of ex-CFC members):
Dear Mr. xxx:
The Chess Federation of Canada is contacting former members of the CFC, such as yourself, to request that you consider becoming a member once again.
The CFC puts out a monthly email newsletter for its members, which has dozens of pages. As well, we have a new website, as of July 2011, which now includes a list of local Canadian chess instructors, besides our list of Canadian chess clubs, etc.:
You don't have to be rude about it. I brought this topic to attention, and although I didn't deserve Bob's praise, I certainly don't deserve your sarcasm.
Master Zach,
It is unfortunate that you had to put down kids in Ghana like that. It is hard to tell what your real attention was.
Your accusations of calling Aman rude is ridiculous and disrespectful.
Maybe you can join Gillanders and Kitich for world domination. According to secret sources, it looks like their hidden agenda. :D
Don't ask me how I know!
Seems to us you guys have a lot in common. Maybe you will get somewhere. :p

Why should anyone apologize, after such disrespectful actions and insults. According to some people, who think they are better then everyone else, it is very ridiculous thing to do!
Maybe Master Zach can join your team to achieve your secret hidden agenda 'World domination'. :o
I think he's on to your plan to control the world through the CFC Bob. :p:p Today the ratings system, tomorrow the world.
Gosh, it looks like knows. Actually, the CFC plans for world domination are not secret, our double agent 007 Bond has infiltrated FIDE, and the CFC rating system is the gold standard. In the interests of full disclosure, here is the CFC executive training video.....
It is very clear to us now, that Master Zach just wants attention and not interesting in starting anything or helping anybody. :p
Truth comes out eventually.
Hi Mike,
Someone had to bring up the topic, and I was in no way, waiting for applause. I was also, in no way, wanting attention. I don't know how many times that I have to say this, but I was passing on a MESSAGE, from our friend of Ghana. I had no intentions of starting anything myself, at any point in time. I thought that was clear when I made this thread. My goal was to see if it was actually possible to help. Turns out, CFC has their hands full, and Hal is looking into it. I don't think I deserve all these individual attacks, and I'm starting to see that it's less of giving me pointers, and more of trying to humiliate me in public.
In the meantime, I have been talking to Abbey Emmanuel on facebook. He is very happy I made a thread on chesstalk, and he hopes that Ghana will be aided in some way.
By saying I am not helping anybody, you are wrong. I am helping our friend from Ghana. If I were to not post on chesstalk, his pleads would remain unheard. Now, there is a chance that Ghana can be helped, and I have played my part.
This is such a cool thread, I can't resist commenting:
1) I think Ghana is a third-world country aka developing country, check it out on Wikipedia
2) Jesse, you need trolling lessons from Aman
3) Sometimes the difference between people in real life and people online are so drastically different
4) Pinky and the Brain was one of my favorite shows growing up, but I always thought the Brain was an arrogant jerk :(
