General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
A nice, immediate, side effect of any CFC structural reform might be that a sudden infusion of fresh blood into the organization may occur, as a result of people becoming more enthusiastic about joining what they think promises to be a more effective :) organization in the future. Right now the CFC is undermanned, which makes it less effective, aside from what having an inefficient structure does to its effectiveness. :)
On a seperate topic, would you be the same Vlad (Drkulec?) whom I remember seeing play in the 1976 Canadian Open in Toronto, e.g. against GM Peter Biyasis (an upset draw)? If you are, I remember you seemed to play some pretty wild chess, at least back then. :)
I am that Vlad Drkulec but Peter beat me in that game. I played tentatively for the first few moves, starting out with 1.Nf3 2.g3 3.Bg2 if my memory serves me correctly and then said what the heck and started to play more sharply. I was winning in the game position with two passed pawns on the sixth rank out of the opening. I did continue to play wild chess though I stopped playing for about a dozen years until returning after I finished school in the 1990s. I stopped playing again in the mid to late 1990s and then returned to the CFC again in 2007 when I struggled to find my form again for a while. I have been struggling with blood sugar issues which seem to be under control at the moment (at least this weekend when the Windsor team won the Kitchener team active tournament). My play has been up and down though recently I have been cutting back on my play with a measly 51 games rated in the first five and a half months of 2011 and I am hoping to make a new charge back up the rating list this summer now that I am well rested after playing 168 games last year.
The handbook has been undated and is current. If anything is still out of date, then please advise. Or are you saying that further motions are needed to "fine tune" the regulations?
You argue that Jean Hebert is correct that we don't help our elite players enough, but then latter you argue against elites getting perks not available to the common players. Do you want us to do more for the elite players or the common players? We do have limited resources, you can't have your cake and eat it too! :)
Canada is zone 2.2 :) Where did you get the impression we had lost our zone status?
I asked Tony about your newsletter complaint. He searched his emails for your complaint, but found none. Did you contact him by email, preferred, or just post your complaint on chesstalk? :)
I am glad you like the newsletter. Getting sufficient local content is dependant upon organizers/ members submitting tournament reports and articles. All are welcome, Tony is always begging for more.
I am very glad to see your strong support for organizers. Thanks. :D
Do you want us to do more for the elite players or the common players?
Give us a list of what the CFC has done for the elite players this past couple of years and what it has done for the common players. Then we can make some suggestions.
Don't be shy. SHOUT out all those things "us" has done!!
Of course Tony would not have an email it was way back when I played John Erickson You played in the same event I got a draw against you .Maybe William F. Darch 5 or 6. cHECK THE OLD WEBZINES OR THE New CFC newsletters You'll see the game where John E lost and my last move is rediculous .I CAN DO IT BUT I'M NOT INTERESTED IN THE PAST SEEMS THE CFC IS ALWAYS WORRIED ABOUT THE PAST THE CFC SHOULD BE WORRIED ABOUT THE FUTURE.
I'm not talking about the freebies or the discounts for Elite I'm talking about the CFC recgonizing the Elite players and helping them become Grandmasters.
Our status is BS. We have what 5-6 GM's but we cannot run a GM tournament in Canada to bring in foreign GM's. Montreal 1979 was an attempt.
Why have most of our GM's left Canada.??? was the CFc their buddies or their ticket out of Canada???
Canadian Organizers are few but getting fewer. Soon you maybe a endangered species.
I have since run 50 PEEL invitationals. 7 William F Darch Memorials 6 John Allan Howard Memorials and we are on #3 Ongoing Peel Tournaments. I think that is doing good but I only use the CFC to rate the gmes give me a reason to do more.

Hi John,
Actually, I keep all my emails and couldn't find any reference to this mistake I made. I believe you are referring to the William F. Darch article you submitted way back.
Since you are not interested in the past, why bring it up? :)

Gary: The annual CFC Financial statements outline where we spend "discretional" spending. If you go to the CFC Website under Governor Letter's 2010/11 you'll find the information.
There is no need to shout John, I was just trying to understand your complaint about the newsletter. I ask because we (the CFC) really do care about the average CFC member. That is especially true about a valued member like yourself who is also an organizer and helps out others wherever possible. Keep up the good work. Yes, I realize we are an endangered species. :(
I'm not talking about the freebies or the discounts for Elite I'm talking about the CFC recgonizing the Elite players and helping them become Grandmasters.
What would you have us do?
The CFC does ensure the national championships are held (Closed, CYCC, Canadian Open, Canadian Junior, Womens). This does gives the elite players an opportunity to compete and improve. The CFC did help sponsor the Canadian Open and Closed this year. We are doing what we can under very severe financial constraints. All of our finances are available on our website for members scrutiny. Would you like us to raise membership dues and/or rating fees to help our elite players?
Major events do offer an opportunity to raise money from sponsors. We encourage organizers to do this, but we also recognize it is difficult. But please understand that this money is used to finance the event and does not flow back to the CFC. In fact, sponsorship money is often used to bring in foreign GM's, so this should meet with your approval.:)

Hi Gary - I have learned from the climate change "debate" that responding to such requests would just be a waste of time. :D

Actually, Fred, I don't see what "us" has done for the common players. Maybe tell us so everyone will know.
Things I did notice is there are only 3 GL's this year. I thought in past years there were too many and they probably took too much time away from other matters.
The figures are only from 9 months.
Contributions from Foundation 5,447
Contribution to Chess Foundation 2340
Contibution to clubs and affiliates 5,220 but it's not broken up so we don't know which one got how much.
Other programs 87,347 and I assume that's $87,347.00.
It's all lumped together so there is no indication of where the money went.
So I'm left with the question of what the CFC did for the common players as opposed to the elite players.
In the days when I organized OTB and the club was common players, I used to try to get the guys to chip in for international programs and so forth. The CFC membership was part of the club membership. Most of us worked and I didn't mind telling players we were supporting chess with our money. I can't see where the CFC did anything for common players and am interested in knowing what's being done these days, since it was mentioned.
There are likely more knitting groups in Canada than there are chess clubs.

This isn't a "debate". You simply list the items. There is no right or wrong reply.
If you want to make statements about what "us" did for the common chess players then tell us what they happen to be. I can't debate it with you because I don't know what it is.
Hey we had world championships in Montreal. Candidates in BC and New Brunswick where is this support now? What is the CFC doing? I believe nothing to bring us back up in status.
How much did the CFC have to do with any of the above? The 1894 Lasker-Steinitz match was shared by New York, Philadelphia, and Montreal. I'm not sure if the Canadian federation at the time was involved, or whether is was private parties only.
The 1971 Fischer-Taimanov match in Vancouver - again - not sure if the CFC was directly involved, or whether John Prentice himself arranged everything.
Saint John 1988: Robert Hamilton and the city were the ones involved here - not the CFC.
The contributions from the Foundation represent 9 months of income earned in FY 2009/2010. I sent in the entire year's income in May 2010 but the CFC chooses to account for it pro rata.
The contributions to the Foundation are Life Memberships. Yours seems to have been lost in the mail, Gary.
Can't help you with the $87k. I have remarked before that it is not possible for the average CFC member to understand income and expenses from this financial statement.
