        Re: Wycc 2011

Overall, the Canadians have 82½ out of a possible 160, so 52%. Round by round, we scored 15½ points in round 1, 17 points in round 2, 23½ in round 3, and 26½ in round 4.

Stars are Olivier-Kenta Chiku-Ratte with 4 points in the U12 open, and Sergey Noritsyn, Qiyu Zhou, Michael Song, and Richard Wang with 3½ points. Another 6 players have 3 points.

          WYCC games from TWIC 889

This week's TWIC database has 25 of the Canadian games from the WYCC. You can dl a PGN and CBV from this link:

          Canadian WYCC games in TWIC889

          http://ottawarachessclub.pbworks.com.../48264408/WYCC games from TWIC889.7z

It seems TWIC is not including any games by players from the U12 or younger events. :(

              Re: Wycc 2011

Probably http://www.chessmix.com will have all games in their next "issue" (Nov. 30).

Chessmix often has a different collection of games from TWIC; plus it has the first names of the players (a problem with TWIC, that I have complained to them about).

I failed to mention that in the Under 12 Girls, Melissa Giblon is also tied for 19th place with Qiyu and UNFORTUNATELY, they are paired facing each other for Round 7!

I would think so the coaching resources have been generally inadequate most years but this year's team has much more resources
( quantity and quality ). Other factors would be the location ( less Europeans ? ) and the fact we sent many young players this year, where Canada traditionally has the best chance to do well.

It is always better to wait until all (or most) results are in before trying to evaluate them. Looking at how things stand before the 9th and final round, it seems that our good early results have faded away leaving no one in serious contention for a medal, and very few shots at top ten places.

It would be unfair though to credit this to coaches "on site". There is only so much one can do during a tournament when there is no time to try to fix basic problems. The real important coaching stuff for players at that level takes place between events. In that respect, there is no doubt in my mind that most if not all of these yougsters are undercoached compared to players from other countries or not coached at all. That is the only way to explain why as a group they are not fighting for medals, and in most cases not even for a top ten spot.
If we consider these young players results as important for them and for canadian chess, a lot more support needs to be provided to them so that they perform up their full potential.

All the players from Quebec were coached a lot before this tournament. The results are not as good as some people hoped, but it is definitely not because of a lack of training between the tournaments. However, it is true that an important part of the training should be done in group, in order to create a good team spirit, which is very important. I believe this is why there will now be an ''Équipe Québec'', which will regroup all the young hopes and prepare them for such tournaments.
