General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Freedom to exploit workers,
Freedom to exploit the environment,
Freedom to impose my religious beliefs onto others,
Freedom to hate and threaten others,
etc.etc.
This is what comes to the mind of criminals, when they hear the word freedom. Pierre did say in his speech yesterday that he will ensure that criminals are put in jail... rather than obstruct free enterprise for Canadians...
He also said that the solution to climate woes lies in technology...
Pierre did say in his speech yesterday that he will ensure that criminals are put in jail... rather than obstruct free enterprise for Canadians...
That sounds like an election promise to arrest peaceful environmental protesters.
Think of the trees. Who will be left to hug the trees?
Hypothetical question: Suppose we get 100% agreement that climate change is real and caused primarily by mankind. Obviously, that will never happen. We can not even get 100% agreement the earth is not flat. But just suppose, just humour me please, for one minute, suppose everyone agrees burning fossil fuels will kill us all eventually, does your political philosophy allow for regulation to curb the fossil fuel industry?

That will not happen if we let free enterprise build technology to prevent it...
You avoided Bob G.'s question, something you are very good at doing.
But we can see that your answer is: NO, your political philosophy DOES NOT allow for regulation to curb the fossil fuel industry.
Oh, so this Pierre fellow said yesterday that he will ensure criminals will be put in jail? But he didn't define "criminals" did he? We'll find out later, if he gets elected, that his definition of criminals are those who support human rights and environmental health first and foremost, AHEAD OF industry and jobs.
Hey Bob A and Bob G,
What do you think of the following statement in a CBC article, https://www.cbc.ca/news/science/tipp...ment-1.6577630 'the Greenland Ice Sheet collapse would happen over 10,000 years once triggered, spreading its effect on the global weather system and sea-level rise over a long period.'

Oh well, now that's an interesting claim. Do they mean that it would take 10,000 years for the Greenland Ice Sheet to completely melt? Or 10,000 years to "collapse" ? Precisely what does collapse mean? I don't mean that to be argumentative, but I have tried to do the math myself to answer the question, if Greenland completely melted, how much does the sea level rise?
It should be a simple math problem. You take the mass of the ice sheet (volume) and spread it over the surface area of the oceans. That should give you the sea level rise, but then over what period of time?
Obviously, when we say 10,000 years, then any claim of urgency becomes laughable. But wait a minute, do the math.
I see recently the claim is that by 2100 melting of Greenland Ice sheet will raise seal level by 1 foot.
So how do we check the validity of this claim in light of the 10,000 year estimate for melting? If that is what they are saying.
If anyone wants to do the math:
What is the volume of ice in the Greenland Ice Sheet?
What is surface area of Oceans?
What is the percentage estimate of Greenland Ice Sheet melting by year 2100?
Show your work.
I would love to work on this question, but I don't have the time.
Bob A., I leave the research to you.
I do recall doing a similar calculation for Antarctica on another thread. Maybe chesstalk moderator would be kind enough to move the old climate change thread to our non chess forum so we can access all those old discussions.

Conspiracy Theories: Nature, or a covert elite governing the planet, will reduce the planetary stress of overpopulation through climate change. Saving the planet and the species requires this radical medicine.

Since Aug., 2022, we have been part of the new CT forum called “The Non-Chess Forum”. Our “Climate Change” thread, and one on COVID-19, were then moved out of the “Open Forum”, which is the homepage by default, and into this new forum. Since then the non-chess topics have slowly started to grow.
Analysis of Last Weeks Stats
The bottom line is that activity has been increasing throughout 2022......each week now, we are well ahead of the 2022 Average.The climate change issue among ChessTalker's is continuing to grab attention!
Climate Change Thread “Responses”
There are lots of climate change articles out there.
This thread encourages CT'ers to re-post responses here when they see climate change posts of interest elsewhere. ChessTalker's have been quite active here, posting “responses”.
I personally, as the thread originator, am trying to post a new response at least every 2nd day, but admit my busy schedule means I am sometimes falling short on this.
The Pressing Climate Change Issue
The core issue:
Building a sense of URGENCY on this issue in society. We must realize that we cannot kick it down the road any longer!
The public is aware of the climate change issue.......
BUT.....
climate activists must find strategies to “AWAKEN” the public to the “urgency”.
The Time Line
Nature's Tipping point is estimated to be, on current trajectory, only 9 years away (Around Jan. 1, 2031). Capping the temperature rise at only 1.5 degrees Celsius is now impossible (UN Climate Change Panel's most recent report). UNCCP noted that current government deadlines were totally insufficient to solve the problem. CO 2 must be capped by 2025! And for the first time, CO 2 “removal” has now become a necessary part of the solution, along with eliminating spewing of greenhouse gases into our atmosphere.
Our window of opportunity is fast closing.
The Large Picture Solutions
Can we come up with at least one or two viable suggestions of impressive, radical things that might wake up the public, that we could then put out there to other concerned client activists?
CT'ers' Local Actions on Climate Change
You can do something! When you like one of this thread's links on an aspect of climate change, spread the news by posting it to your social media accounts and other Websites/Discussion Boards you participate in!
